What insurance do I need as an owner operator.

If you are under a permanent lease to a trucking company with an MC or DOT Number, you are considered an owner operator and may be covered under non trucking or bobtail liability policy. Here are the coverage you may need.

Physical Damage: Just like the full coverage insurance in your car, this is sometimes called comprehensive insurance. It covers anything that happens to your truck regardless of fault. You may ask if you need physical damage, after all you have been driving with liability only in your car and never had to call insurance for 10 years. Well, if you are making payments on your truck or trailer, your finance company or bank will definitely want their interest protected. On a second note, if your truck is paid for, one accident or incident can wipe away your livelihood without physical damage insurance. I strongly recommend physical damage when you are shopping for truck insurance at least to protect your investment.

Non-trucking Liability Insurance: This type of policy is designed to cover the owner operator on liability claims that may arise when they are not under dispatch. Unlike Bobtail insurance, it does not matter whether a trailer is attached or not.

Bobtail: covers liability claims when not under dispatch, but without out a trailer.
